Adjustable Depth
The Science
The Er:YAG erbium laser emits light at 2940 nm, a wavelength that water absorbs almost completely. Because skin is mostly water, the energy vaporizes a precise, thin layer at the surface with very little heat spreading to surrounding tissue. This is called ablative resurfacing.
Depth is adjustable. A light setting removes the very top layer for texture and surface pigment with a shorter recovery. Deeper settings reach further to treat wrinkles and acne scarring, and they carry a longer recovery. Your laser team chooses the depth after your assessment.
As the treated area heals, new skin cells and fresh collagen replace what was removed. Many patients notice skin that feels firmer as texture improves, though erbium resurfacing is a texture and surface treatment first. We are careful to set expectations about skin tightening at your consultation.

What to Expect
Step 1
We examine your texture, lines, scars, and pigment, review medications and sun exposure, and agree on a depth. We also confirm your calendar can absorb the downtime.
Step 2
A test spot checks how your skin responds, especially on medium to darker tones. We may start a skincare prep and, for some patients, an antiviral if you have a history of cold sores.
Step 3
Topical numbing goes on first. The handpiece passes over each area in a grid, and you feel warmth and a prickling sensation. A full face takes about 30 to 60 minutes.
Step 4
Expect redness, weeping, and peeling for several days depending on depth. Keep the skin moist with the products we give you, stay out of the sun, and wear daily sunscreen for weeks afterward.
Safety and Skin Tone
This treatment has real downtime. Depending on depth, plan on several days of redness and peeling, with pinkness that can linger longer. Sun avoidance afterward is required, and daily sunscreen protects the new skin. We ask patients to schedule resurfacing away from events and travel.
Darker skin tones carry a higher risk of pigment change after ablative resurfacing. We use conservative depths and a test spot, and sometimes recommend chemical peels or microneedling instead. Avoid tanning and self-tanner for two weeks before treatment. Tell us about recent acne medications, a history of keloid scarring, active infections, or pregnancy.
